So, here’s the deal. One day I saw a guy (Andre) and what appeared to be his Mom hitch-hiking from Hibberdene to Port Shepstone. Long story short, Andre now works for me. Note: He is now employed. The culprit in what follows should be named and shamed. I’ll not be so bold as we have not laid a charge, however …

I gave Andre  some nice tools which are actually great tools for business owners who wish to create a web presence and enter the way the world is moving. The tools include a list of No.1 and Top 10 Google results for numerous categories of business in Port Shepstone and the KZN South Coast which the directory holds and results for this particular business owners category which have genuinely slaughtered the Web on the South Coast .

Anyway, off goes Andre with his tools and he walks in. Being as Andre is, he introduces himself and before he could say: “My name is so and so and I’m from Oink so and so and without wasting your time I’d like to ….”, he (Andre) was told he WAS wasting that individuals time and to ‘phuck’ off from his premises.

Was he just having a bad day? Even so, could the A-HOLE not have simply listened beyond one sentence? How did he know what was on offer? He didn’t, so what does that make him beside being a bad business person? A flippin ignorami ’til his A’tude from his business him do part.

I swear, go look for anything from Car services to brakes, to shock absorbers on the KZN or Durban South Coast on Google, you’ll find me somewhere there and thereabouts most times and you can be sure you’ll never find this particular business on any directory associated with me or my business. Somewhere between Nuts and an A-Hole, I think someone just made a bad business decision and screwed themselves.

About Free Internet Advertising

Although my journey along the South Coast has been set back here and there, I have spoken with a number of business owners along the Coast South of Durban and come to the conclusion that businesses on the KZN South Coast hesitate to spend money on internet marketing. When I speak to business managers & owners of telephone directories, usually the 1st question asked, is “… is it free?”

There are numerous free advertsing directories which you can list your business with on the internet, and it’s good if you can get quality links, but the truth about free advertising and free classifieds is that although they will get results, it is very rarely that a free directory will gain the broad spectrum of results on the world’s most popular search engines (Google, Yahoo! and Bing) that a paid directory will. In short I refer to the amount of results thrown out for different services & products and locations from a one-page website.

The Importance of having One’s Own Business Website

The sheer cost of building websites and internet advertising, when combined, can be an offputting prospect for your business, but here’s the truth. Having one’s own website is not the be-all-and-end-all of internet marketing success. When starting out in business, it’s an unnecessary expense. When a business is established, a business website can be a great tool if optimized to the hilt (get a copywriter for your content who can give you established results!), but generally, most websites are used as reference sites which are linked to from other advertising (like directories & sponsored links etc.)

In the old days when .com’s were the in thing, companies would get a great response from promoting their URL name. However, in 2010 there are very few browsers who find businesses (or anything, for that matter) on the internet using a direct URL address (unless bookmarked). The most used method of seeking out businesses is to enter the location and the service category or type of item you are looking for into the search engine of one’s choice. This is where Directories capture the internet search market.

Simply put, directories (apart from very well optimized websites, which are the exception) dominate world searches for business services and products in specified locations. Why? Because of the volume and variety of information contained on the directories. A content issue which no individual category business website can compete with.

A Tip or Two

Having said the above, a business website is essential for the development of the brand, but it only becomes essential once the brand has a budget with which to work. For small businesses looking to establish a web-presence and internet visibility it’s imperative to list with your location telephone directories and business directories. Ask the directory for examples of their results with the Google’s of the world and compare what you’re getting!

In this day and age if an internet directory is asking you for more than a thousand bucks on an annual basis, their web-pages should get you a minimum of 10 top 10 results on Google for differing search phrases which will find you in your category AND location on the world’s top search engines. The chances are that if a business directory doesn’t have your category of business on their website, they will be able to create that category for you. Ask for their results in other categories of business and if they perform well, the chances are they’ll do the same with your category. Speak to the developers. Let them know what you want. If they can’t give it to you. Move on.

Internet marketing is essential one way or the other. It’s where the world is and the dependence on the internet for information in whatever form continues to grow from the street up to the top floor of the world’s biggest and most powerful organizations.

Promote your business, whether it’s a South Coast car service centre, beauty salon or hairdresser, security service or bulk meat supplies, and you promote the town you’re in. Promote the KZN South Coast town you’re in, whether it be in Umzumbe, Port Shepstone, Mtwalume or Winklespruit and promote your South Coast in South Africa and Internationally. It’s how it works nowadays!

Somewhere on the KwaZulu-Natal South CoastIs the KwaZulu-Natal coastal region further South of Amanzimtoti being rejected by the organisers and researchers for the 2010 World Cup Soccer in South Africa? I was paging through a 2010 booklet, “The Warmest Place To Be For 2010″, issued by Durban Tourism, and learned that “the Durban Metropolitan area covers … Umkomaas in the south to Tongaat in the north, and as far as Cato Ridge in the west.”

I found this interesting, because no-where in the booklet is there really any dedicated space to any other town South of Durban on the East Coast except for Amanzimtoti. For example, how many golf courses are there further South of Durban and up to Umkomaas? The only South Coast golf course listed in the booklet is in Amanzimtoti. I stand to be corrected on this, but I’m sure I’ve heard or read of the South Coast, or parts of it, being known or referred to as the Golf Coast?

So what am I on about? Simple. I’m on about Winklespruit,  Warner Beach, Doonside, Illovo, Karridene, even Umkomaas itself which is the last town which falls under the Durban Metropolitan. Tourism is not simply about advertising, education plays a role and although the booklet is informative, it doesn’t extend the opportunity to visitors to our shores to discover stunning, although less known, tourist destinations and beaches along the South Coast.

To my mind the Coastal region South of Durban begins in the Bluff and ends where the Transkei begins. All the Dolphin Coast & Hibiscus Coast names are for geographical mapping, territorial and council purposes, sure, but frankly speaking, it doesn’t matter to me what the region is called, as long as I find myself South of Durban and not IN Durban, I’m happy.

Even so, I think the organizers and researchers who researched the South Coast neglected to visit or research the little gems which dot the South Coast every  few km’s. Even if there was a submission process, I feel the booklet could have included just an introduction to each south Coast Town up to Umkomaas instead of listing every other restaurant in Amanzimtoti or ‘toti as it is affectionately known to locals.

So, for me it simply shows me that a genuinely dedicated South Coast Directory of Information for towns along the East Coast of South Africa between Amanzimtoti (I may still include the Bluff at a later stage) and Port Edward is not only required, but essential to the South Coast region. I intend this to be that platform and this is why the South Coast Journey from town to town is more significant than some would realise.
